ON-01 by Eamonn Doyle
2015

What a start. The impact of this first photo when you open ON.

The energy of the city. Three men move through Dublin leaving vapour trails in the sky.

One in a t-shirt. Pumped, striding purposefully; tongue in mouth, concentrating, looking down. He put on his new jeans today. His wallet begins to leave its mark on the new pocket. He has places to go.

His wing-man in a Liverpool Football Club top. A Liverpudlian or a Dubliner? No matter. A city is home for people passing through. Squinting into the sun, his mouth slightly open, about to speak and alert his mate that something is coming.

The man at the back. About to cross paths or just overtaken by the other two? Wearing a coat. It’s still too cold for a t-shirt walking at his pace. But his coat buttons are undone. Soon, he too will take on the pace of this city.

In the background, The Gate Theatre. Where the first Samuel Beckett Festival was held. Beckett’s influence runs through Doyle’s photos.

And on the left, the only woman in the frame. Slightly veering away and in less of a hurry. Bemused at what is in front of her.

Whatever is ahead won’t stop these four people. They know that in this city they need to keep pushing forward or else they will be swamped and left in the gutter, or worse… in the suburbs.
